The temperature is heating up and the days are getting longer – summertime is here! Whether you are planning a relaxing staycation, jet-setting to a different country, or just planning to chill by the pool, there are a few things you should know if this is your first summer with braces. After all, you don’t want your fun in the sun to have a negative impact on your treatment timeline. To prevent this from happening, keep reading for a few best practices to keep in mind this season!

#1. Stay Away From Braces-Breaking Foods

From delicious corn on the cob to crunchy caramel apples, summer is a season filled with lots and lots of mouthwatering treats. Unfortunately, many of them can lead to loose brackets and broken wires, which is why it is so important to abide by your orthodontist’s dietary restrictions. Instead, opt for braces-friendly summer staples, like mashed potatoes, soft fruits, and pasta salad.

#2. Keep a Travel Kit Nearby

Orthodontic-related injuries can strike at a moment’s notice and often happen at the most inconvenient times. To prevent your relaxing afternoon from turning into a stressful trip to your orthodontist’s office, make sure to keep the below items within arm’s reach:

  • Orthodontic wax
  • OTC pain reliever
  • Floss
  • Your orthodontist’s contact information

#3. Beware of Sugar

Relaxing by the pool with an ice-cold glass of soda or going on a late-night ice cream run with your friends are activities your tastebuds love but your teeth despise. That’s because products that are high in sugar turn into enamel-eroding acid once they hit your mouth, significantly increasing your chances of tooth decay. Therefore, try to opt for healthier alternatives instead and make sure to drink plenty of water along the way!

#4. Don’t Forget Your Oral Hygiene Routine

On vacation, a solid oral hygiene routine is one of the first things to go. However, dental problems like tooth decay and gum disease can cause serious complications, which you want to avoid. With this in mind, make sure to brush your teeth for two minutes at least twice a day, floss daily, and use mouthwash regularly. If you haven’t had your first dental checkup and cleaning of 2021, then make sure to schedule that as well!

Summer is meant for days enjoying the beautiful weather. Fortunately, braces won’t get in your way – as long as you care for them properly! So, keep the above tips in mind to enjoy all this season has to offer.
