5 Reasons Why Your Child Should Get Braces In the Summer

Summer is just around the corner! What do you have planned for your family? While it’s undoubtedly the best time of year to sit back and enjoy some well-earned rest and relaxation, it’s also the perfect time to think about your child’s orthodontic needs. If they need braces, there’s no better time of year to get them started! Here are five great reasons why your child should get braces in summer.

1.) Minimize Missed School Time

Summertime means a more open schedule, which means visiting the orthodontist for their consultation and checkups won’t take time away from school, homework, or extracurricular activities. In addition, if they have any trouble or complaints about their braces initially, it will be easier to schedule their next appointment.

2.) Summertime Treats Can Ease Dental Soreness

It’s no secret that braces can cause a measure of discomfort, especially in the beginning of treatment. Thankfully, many of your child’s seasonal summertime treats are both braces-friendly and helpful for relieving soreness. Smoothies, frozen yogurt, popsicles, milkshakes, ice cream, and iced drinks can all be enjoyed to bring down swelling and numb dental discomfort.

3.) Start Treatment Now, Avoid Overwhelming Them Later

From eating and brushing their teeth to speaking and showing off their smile, braces will change many aspects of your child’s day-to-day life. Trying to adapt to all these changes while simultaneously balancing school and other social activities can easily become overwhelming. Starting braces in summer gives them a chance to get used to life with braces by the time school starts.

4.) More Time to Learn How to Care for Braces

Keeping your child’s smile healthy with braces will take a little bit more effort than they’re accustomed to. In addition to brushing for a full two minutes twice a day like normal and perhaps start rinsing with mouthwash, they will also need to learn to floss around braces. Summer gives them some extra time in the day to learn all their new cleaning routines.

5.) Help Your Child Smile Confidently By Fall

It’s completely normal for your child to feel a little self-conscious about their smile when they first begin to wear braces. It will take a bit of time and practice for them to get used to their new appearance as well as learn how to speak and eat comfortably. Let your child get used to their braces during summertime so they can smile confidently by fall.

Remember, correcting orthodontic issues isn’t just about appearances; it also prevents serious oral health issues in the future. If your child needs braces, summer is the best time to start their journey towards a straighter smile!
