My Teeth Aren’t Moving During My Invisalign Treatment; What’s Going On?

Invisalign is a popular orthodontic treatment because it’s discreet, comfortable, and effective—not to mention, it doesn’t come with the same restrictions as traditional braces! However, like any orthodontic process, sometimes teeth don’t move exactly as expected. If you’ve noticed that your progress seems slower than planned, you’re not alone; many patients wonder if their trays have stopped doing their job. Here are three reasons why this can seemingly happen, and what your orthodontist can do to get things back on track.

1. Not Wearing the Aligners Often Enough

Invisalign aligners need to be worn for roughly 22 hours every day to work properly. If they’re left out too long, whether it’s due to meals, hygiene, or simple negligence, your teeth won’t receive the consistent pressure they need to gradually shift into healthier positions. Even just a few hours here and there can add up, and slowly but surely, your progress will fall behind.

2. Complex Tooth Movements Are Needed

It may seem hard to believe, but some teeth are more stubborn than others. Rotating teeth, closing large gaps, or moving molars can take much longer than planned, and in these cases, your orthodontist may recommend attachments or elastics to help guide movement along in a timely manner. It’s also highly likely that refinements are needed following your treatment, to wrap things up properly.

3. The Aligners Have Begun to Fit Poorly

If your aligners aren’t seated properly on your teeth, they won’t be able to do their job, not to mention, it can cause you extra discomfort. This poor fit sometimes occurs if you don’t use chewies, which are small, chewable rubber cylinders that can help your aligners properly rest on your teeth. Other times, saliva or air pockets can prevent them from fitting correctly. It’s also possible for physical damage, or even disfigurement from hot water, to bend or alter their shape and prevent a correct fit.

Remember, no two smiles are alike, and some teeth may simply move more slowly than others, even when Invisalign is worn as instructed and all guidelines are followed. This is why keeping up with your routine check-ins is so important—things can be corrected and set straight sooner rather than later!
